Help us achieve smaller classes & reject the attempt to replace human interaction with AI bots!
Dec. 16, 2025
1. Today the IBO released a report with their estimate of the costs of staffing to comply with the class size law; check out our response on how compliance could be achieved more thoroughly, equitably, efficiently and affordably than DOE currently plans to do. More on this soon.
2. Contracts for four AI vendors are still on the agenda for tomorrow’s PEP meeting on Wednesday, December 17 at 6 pm at the Evander Childs Educational Campus (800 East Gun Hill Road, Bronx), at a total cost of $4.1 million over three years.
These contracts were put back on the agenda by the DOE, despite the fact that three of the four were already voted down just two months ago, and despite growing resistance against the use of AI in the classroom among NYC teachers, parents and advocates alike. This is evidenced by resolutions just passed by CEC 4 and CEC 20, calling for a two-year moratorium on the use of AI because of the serious harm that this technology could inflict on students without rigorous guardrails.
Please attend the PEP meeting if you can, but in any case send an email TODAY to PEP members, by copying and pasting the email list on my blog here. Feel free to use any of the points in my message or write your own! We defeated this push to expand AI last October, we have a chance of doing it again if enough people speak out.
3. Finally, if you care about ensuring that smaller classes are provided to all NYC students who need them, and that the attempt by tech billionaires to replace human interaction and feedback with AI bots should be rejected, please support Class Size Matters with a tax-deductible donation in 2025.
We work on a shoestring while battling very wealthy and powerful forces. We need your support to keep going and maintain the fight.
Thanks, Leonie
