Class size applications due, AI forum, and how how 3 Gates-funded organizations are on the wrong side of equity

December 1, 2025

  • Reminder: Wed. Dec. 3 is the deadline for NYC schools to fill out the survey/application for class size funding for next year. If you haven’t heard from your principal or your School Leadership Team about their plans, you should ask them ASAP. Principals are supposed to confirm that their SLTs have been consulted in the application process.  I have posted most of the information that DOE has made available to principals about this process– but not to parents — on my website here. And please let me know what you hear!
  • Nearly every day, I receive yet another article about the problems posed by Artificial Intelligence. If this is an issue that concerns you, please attend a forum to discuss AI’s risks to student privacy, the environment, and learning itself, to be held this Saturday, Dec. 6 at 10 AM at the City as School library, on 16 Clarkson St. Child care is provided!  More info and sign up here.
  • A couple of weeks ago, EdTrust, Educators for Excellence, and Robin Hood, three organizations that receive Gates funding and support corporate-type reforms, held a press conference to argue that DOE should pause all further efforts to lower class size because the funding for this year was distributed in an unfair manner. Yet even if true, that is no reason to deprive the most marginalized students of smaller classes in the future, especially as hundreds of thousands are still crammed into overcrowded schools and classrooms. For our rebuttal to this misconceived “pause”, along with a detailed analysis of how many NYC students are still deprived of the smaller classes they need for a better opportunity to learn,
