The AI high school is cancelled! But join us at the PEP anyway!
April 28, 2026
Good news! The Chancellor withdrew the proposal to create an AI high school. Check out the NY Times story about this here, in which I’m quoted as saying the ”intense outrage among parents in NYC [about AI] is as great as I’ve seen it on any education issue that I’ve been working on for 25 years.” Which is true.
We, along with other AI opponents, are still planning to attend the PEP meeting tomorrow tonight, Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at 6:00 pm at MS 131 on 100 Hester Street to speak out about the fact that DOE is rapidly expanding the use of AI in classrooms throughout the city, with no effective guardrails to protect students from its damage to their education, privacy and mental health. I will also be speaking against the inadequate capital plan. Please join us in front of the school at 5 PM and sign up to speak at 5:30 PM as well! If you need notes, you can check our one-page critique of the feeble DOE AI guidance here.
One more thing – my birthday is this Friday, May 1. For several years now, Class Size Matters has been struggling financially to keep going. If you appreciate our analysis or advocacy on class size, student privacy, or keeping AI out of schools, please donate to Class Size Matters as a tax-deductible birthday gift. Or purchase a ticket to our May 19 dinner honoring Diane Ravitch.
Thanks, Leonie
