Update on AI Moratorium and Mayoral control hearings
Feb. 26, 2026
A new Coalition has formed calling for an AI Moratorium in NYC Schools. The Coalition includes a growing number of organizations including AQE, Class Size Matters, Climate Families NYC, DSA Tech Action, MORE-UFT, NYC Kids PAC, the Parent Coalition for Student Privacy, Parents for AI Caution in Educational Spaces, and Racially Just Public Schools. Here is a short FAQ about why we need a pause in the rapid expansion of AI programs while rigorous guardrails are developed with community and expert input.
Here’s how you can help:
- Sign and share our petition to get it to 1,000 signatures. It’s almost there already!
- Save the date! Join us at the Chancellor’s listening tour on Sat. March 14 at 10:30 AM at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Campus at 122 Amsterdam Ave. to say that we want AI out of our children’s school to protect their privacy, their cognitive development, creativity, mental health and the climate. We’ll be holding a rally beforehand at 10 AM. More details soon.
- Pass a resolution in favor of an AI moratorium, as have Community Education Councils in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.
- Invite a member of our coalition to speak at your CEC, PTA, or Community Board to explain why an AI moratorium is critical at this time.
2. Last week, Council hearings were held on Mayoral control. Check out my brief account of the pointed questioning by Council members of DOE officials, as well as testimonies explaining how one-man rule over the last twenty plus years has not served our children well. Testimonies include those from eminent historian Diane Ravitch, Jonathan Greenberg of the Educational Council Consortium, Manhattan PEP member Naveed Hasan, President of NYC Kids PAC Naila Rosario, and me for Class Size Matters.
Talk to you soon, Leonie
