Send a message to the Council today, for more funding for class size reduction!

June 6, 2024

School budgets allocations dropped today for next year, and serious problems remain. The DOE has allocated only $137M to hire more teachers for class size reduction, which is inadequate and spread too thin over too many schools. Nearly 500 schools are receiving less than $100,000, which is not enough to hire even one additional teacher. Our demands, co-signed by ECC and AQE, call for at least at least $300 million to be invested in hiring 3,000 more teachers – one fourth of the number that the DOE says will be required over the next four years to lower class sizes to mandated levels.

While the DOE has agreed to hold school budgets harmless for enrollment decline, they refuse to promise that schools will not be subjected to mid-year cuts, which are extremely damaging to school planning and stability. They have also not added a single cent to the proposed five-year school capital plan, even though the state budget agreement called for an increase of $2 billion to create sufficient classroom space for smaller classes. Please send an email to the City Council today, demanding that they negotiate improvements to the budget before approving it. There is no time to waste as the budget will likely be finalized soon.

2, Also, please sign up for our Skinny award dinner next Wednesday June 12th –- less than a week away. Your help and support allows us to continue our advocacy and budget oversight, so that NYC students can receive a better chance to learn.

Thanks so much, Leonie
