New proposed capital plan cuts $2.3B for new school seats compared to plan adopted in 2021

March 5, 2023

The new proposed amendment to the 5-year capital plan for schools was recently released; you can check it out here. Compared to the capital plan adopted in June 2021, the DOE/SCA wants to cut the number of new school seats to be built by 38% — or over 21,000.  This is inconceivable considering more than 300,000 students are enrolled in overcrowded schools according to the latest available data, and the state is requiring DOE to start lowering class size starting next fall. Yet nowhere in the pages of the capital plan is the new class size mandate mentioned that was passed last June by the State Legislature.

For a briefing on the overcrowding/class size data in your district, and what these capital plan cuts mean for your district, email us at info@classsizematters.org; thanks!
