More warnings against unrestrained use of AI in the classroom!
January 22, 2026
The Brookings Institution released a new report, saying the risks of using AI in schools to student learning, privacy, safety, and social and emotional development currently outweigh the benefits. Check out the one-page summary, the full report here, or this NPE piece. I am interviewing the main author of this report, Rebecca Winthrop, on my WBAI radio show, Talk out of School at 7 PM this Sunday night.
Meanwhile, the DOE is asking the Panel for Educational Policy yet again to approve a contract to purchase Kiddom’s entire line of digital products that incorporate AI, costing up to $1.5 million, at their meeting on Wednesday night — even though these same products were rejected three times already, as recently as the PEP’s meeting in October.
Please sign our petition if you haven’t already, urging the Mayor and Chancellor to institute an AI moratorium until rigorous guardrails can be created to prevent serious harm to students. Also, if you might be able to attend and speak out against this contract at Wednesday’s meeting at the Petrides school on Staten Island, please let me know by replying to this message.
We also have a draft resolution for CECs or Community Boards to consider on this subject . At least two CECs have passed similar resolutions already. Also let me know if your CEC or other parent group would like a presentation on this important topic.
Meanwhile stay warm, Leonie
