Invitation to a forum on the risks of using AI in the classroom on Dec. 6
1. Class Size Matters and the Parent Coalition for Student Privacy are among the groups co-sponsoring a important forum for parents and teachers on the rapidly expanded use of AI in the classroom, and how this is affecting privacy, the environment, and the development of students’ critical thinking and cognitive skills. The forum will be held on Sat. Dec. 6 from 10 AM – noon at the City as School building, 16 Clarkson St, map here.(Near #1 at Houston St., or C, E at Spring St. You can find out more information and register here.
I was quoted last week in Chalkbeat on how thrilled I was that three AI products were voted down at the Oct. PEP meeting, but the battle has only begun to resist the push of the ed tech overlords to expand AI’s data-mining reach into the classroom. It’s past time that parents and teachers take a serious look at the potential harms that AI may represent and start demanding rigorous protections. Please join us on Dec. 6!
2. The deadline for your school to apply for class size reduction funds for next year is Wed. Dec.3. If you haven’t discussed your school’s plan with your principal and School Leadership Team, you should do so as soon as possible. We finally got hold of the FAQ for principals, that, like other critical information, is being withheld from parents, despite the DOE claim that they want them to be involved in their schools’ planning efforts. I’ve made more of these documents available here on our website. And remember, we’re available to try to answer any questions that you might have.
