How the attacks on small class size don’t add up

September 28, 2023

  1. I wanted to share with you my piece in Monday’s Washington Post, written in response to Michael Bloomberg’s attacks against the new class size law.  In my oped, I correct his factual errors and point out his misleading use of data as drawn from a recent Chalkbeat piece.  In case it’s behind the paywall, or you don’t want to create an account to read it, I have posted the same oped with charts on my blog here.

Clearly, there is a vocal constituency that would like the law repealed or amended.  In the case of Michael Bloomberg, there appear to be ulterior motives, which I discuss in the piece.

  1. On Monday the last  public session will take place to provide feedback on the preliminary proposals of the Class Size Working Group:

Monday, October 2ndCitywide from 5- 7:30pm; in person at the MLK Campus Auditorium, 122 Amsterdam Ave,  Manhattan.

To listen in, you can sign up at https://learndoe.org/class_size/, but you must be physically present to speak.

The Work Group’s preliminary proposals are rather sketchily summarized here, but to have them more properly explained, it would be useful to hear the presentation.

You can also send in comments, feedback, and suggestions by Wednesday Oct 4 at midnight to: ClassSize@schools.nyc.gov  Please do!

  1. I interviewed Johanna Garcia, chief of staff to Sen. Robert Jackson and co-chair of the Class Size Working Group on my podcast, Talk out of School.  She explained the legislative history and the larger context of the long and hard fight for smaller classes that grew out of the Campaign for Fiscal Equity lawsuit.  You can listen to the interview here.

 Thanks, Leonie
