“Cut Contracts, Save our Schools” – speak out against DOE waste & abuse
April 28, 2020
Yesterday there was an emergency press conference to protest the DOE’s $827 million proposed cuts to education and to urge that they cut contracts and unnecessary spending on bureaucracy instead. A video of this press conference featuring parent leaders, teachers, advocates, and elected officials, is posted on our blog, along with a press release and link to news clips.
Some of this unnecessary spending includes $700 million for busing this year that is not being used, $200 million of which will be voted on during tomorrow Wednesday’s Panel for Educational Policy meeting. This is despite the fact that the NYC Comptroller has pointed out that DOE is not legally obligated to extend these contracts given the coronavirus pandemic. Given the huge fiscal crisis and proposed cuts to schools next year this spending is hard to justify.
You can access tomorrow’s Panel meeting and sign up to speak against the budget cuts and DOE’s unnecessary spending on contracts and bureaucracy by filling out a form you can access here, between 5:30 and 6:15 PM tomorrow night. Please do!
More soon, Leonie
