Latest on budget cuts, lawsuit hearings, and FAQ on new class size law

Sept. 28, 2022

The Appellate Court hearings on the lawsuit to restore the budget cuts to schools are scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 29. Only the attorneys are allowed in the courtroom but observers will be able to watch the proceedings via  the live stream or on YouTube, starting at about 2 PM for all the cases on the docket that afternoon.

The calendar is here; Tucker vs. City of NY is listed 17th out of 20 cases, so the oral arguments are unlikely to start before 3 PM. A decision in the case will likely come soon after; though we cannot know for sure.

In preparation for the hearings, we commissioned an updated analysis of the total Galaxy budget cuts to schools. As of today, Sept. 28, 2022, school budgets have been cut by a total of $1,219,293,619 compared to last year. That’s an average of $770,729 cut per school. On our website, you can download a searchable spreadsheet to see how much your school has been cut.

Meanwhile, we have also posted an FAQ on the new class size law. We will be reaching out to you soon to help ensure that parent leaders, advocates and elected officials are included in a Task Force to carry out the planning and implementation of this important initiative. Stay tuned!

thanks Leonie
