Last chance to comment on the DOE’s class size “plan” for next year

July 7, 2025

I hope you had a great Independence Day weekend.

Just a quick reminder to let you know that public comments on DOE’s draft Class Size Reduction Plan for next year are due no later than July 8, tomorrow Tuesday at midnight. You can send your comments to ContractsForExcellence@schools.nyc.gov.

You can also sign onto our comments, by entering your information here no later than midnight tonight, Monday July 7.

If you’d like to see how many NYC schools in your district do not have enough space to lower class size to the mandated levels at their current enrollment, according to the DOE, you can check out the figures in charts posted here — see Figures 1 and 2.

The NY State Legislature passed the class size law more than three years ago, and yet DOE continues to refuse to produce an actual plan that has a chance of reaching all students and schools by Sept. 2028, as the law requires. Instead, they appear to be counting on getting a permanent exemption from the state and their union partners for all currently overcrowded schools.   In fact, their latest “plan” uses the word exemption 40 times, compared to 22 times in last year’s plan, and only eight times in their initial class size plan submitted  June 2023.

Again, if you’d like  to sign onto our comments, please enter your information here today.

Thanks Leonie
