Class size working group, hearings on next year’s budget, and how you can help!

March 13, 2023

1.       The Chancellor is forming a working group to help DOE develop their class size reduction plan. You can apply to be a member of the group here; with a deadline of tomorrow, March 14 at 5 PM.

2.       The City Council will be holding hearings on the Mayor’s preliminary education budget this Wed. March 15 starting at 9 AM at City Hall. Public testimony begins at 2 PM. Please sign up to speak here, either remotely or in person, to urge the Council to restore the savage budget cuts to schools and expand the capital plan, so that all schools and districts are able to meet the class size caps in the new state law. If you’d like help in drafting testimony, let me know. You can also submit testimony up to 72 hours following the hearings. We have a summary of our budget priorities here.

3.       We have drafted a new resolution on the budget that CECs and other groups should consider passing. If you support it, please forward it to your Presidents Council, CEC and/or Community Board. A growing number of groups have now passed versions of our resolution against the Governor’s proposal to raise the charter cap.

And as always, let us know if your organization would like a briefing on either of these issues.

Talk to you soon, Leonie
