3 important events happening this week!

Just a brief email about three important events happening this week.
- First, this Sunday, March 17 at 7 PM, I’ll be hosting a special edition of Talk Out of School on WBAI on 99.5 FM, or www.wbai.org on the problems with the NYC mandated reading curriculum, with my guests: teacher Martina Meijer, parent Alina Lewis, and NYU curriculum expert Flor Khan. Please listen and call in with your views!
2. Council hearings on the education budget are scheduled for this Monday, March 18, starting at 10 AM; public testimony at about 2:30 PM. You can sign up to speak in person or remotely here, to protest the looming budget cuts, the rising class sizes, and/or the fact that the DOE has slashed billions from the capital plan, including thousands of new school seats AFTER the class size law was passed, which makes no sense.
Are these huge budget cuts necessary? Are they going to cause more families to send their kids to NYC public schools, or convince them to stay in the city rather than move elsewhere? Are they going to help NYC learn? The answer is absolutely not.
- Then on Wednesday, March 20, starting at 6 PM, the Panel for Educational Policy is due to vote on the estimated education budget for next year, including over $500 million in cuts, as well as the $2B chopped from new capacity in the capital plan. The meeting will be held at the Bayard Rustin Educational Campus, 351 West 18th Street, between 8th and 9th Ave. Sign-up to speak starts at 5:30 PM. More info here.
