Presentation to CPAC: Problems with DOE’s failure to plan for class size reduction
Dec. 12, 2024
Today, we provided a briefing to the Chancellors Parent Advisory Council on the serious problems with the DOE’s implementation of class size reduction, as required by the class size law. Their most glaring failing is the fact that there has been no move to provide space for overcrowded or overenrolled schools. In addition, the DOE is proposing to exempt all such schools from ever lowering class size, that could deny up to half or more students (and teachers) from ever being provided with smaller classes, contrary to the intent and language of the law. A video of our presentation along with questions asked and answered is posted on the CPAC YouTube channel at ten minutes in.
We advise schools to apply for class size funding by Dec. 20, including if they need to cap enrollment at lower levels, and urge parents to pass our resolution and sign our petition, urging DOE to provide more space by also launching an accelerated school construction plan.
