Please Support Class Size Matters and NCLB Revision

November 30, 2015

Dear Friend,

This Wednesday December 2 is Giving Day. It is the time of year to give to charitable organizations. Please consider giving to Class Size Matters, to help us support and improve our public schools.

Class Size Matters focuses on the need to provide all students with the right to a quality education, and a class size small enough so they can receive meaningful feedback from their teachers and engage in discussion and debate. Smaller classes have been shown not only to improve student grades and test scores – but also student engagement, high school graduation rates and whether they go to college and get a good job. Smaller classes are also linked to fewer disciplinary problems and lower teacher attrition rates. It is one of the very few education reforms that has been shown to significantly narrow the achievement gap.

We also advocate for stronger student privacy protections and parent empowerment. We had a big victory last year with the defeat of inBloom, and we’re still working hard to ensure for the right of parents to protect their children’s data. Earlier this year, we helped stop a DOE contract worth potentially more than $2 Billion to a company which engaged in an illegal kickback scheme. And we have challenged the NYC Department of Education in court to ensure that School Leadership Teams, composed of half parents and half school staff, have more than “advisory” authority and that their deliberations are subject to open meetings law. If you value our work, please consider giving a tax-deductible donation today.

2. Congress is about to revise NCLB – for the first time in more than 13 years. Network for Public Education has drafted a letter you can send to your Senators and House member, opposing a provision in the bill which would enable Wall Street bankers to profit off our public schools through something called Social Impact bonds. Please read this explanation and send your letter today.

Thanks,
