Letter to state about NYC’s failure to comply with class size law

Dec. 23, 2024

1. Just a quick note to let you know that along with the Education Law Center, we sent a letter to Commissioner Rosa last week, pointing out specific ways that NYC has been flouting the class size law. We urged her to require that DOE produce a five-year class size plan as the law requires, and to substantially improve their November Implementation Report so it contains the requisite information as to staffing, enrollment and space. Without doing so, there is no reason to believe that NYC students will be provided with the smaller classes that is their right under the law and the State Constitution. Our letter is here; the press release here.

2.Our petition urging the DOE to do the same has more than 800 signers; please add your name if you haven’t already.

3. Finally, if you want Class Size Matters to keep fighting for smaller classes and accountability for the NYC Department of Education in 2025, please make a tax-deductible donation today. We will simply be unable to keep going without the support of people like you.
