Update: Public Advocate and NYC Council Final Letter on need for expanded capital plan & Commission
On June 15, 2015 Public Advocate Letitia James, 22 Council Members, many parent leaders and Presidents of Community Education Councils, along with Class Size Matters and the UFT, sent a letter to the Chancellor and the Mayor, urging them to double the seats in the capital plan for school construction, and appoint a Commission to improve the adequacy and efficiency of school planning.
School overcrowding is at critical levels, the planning process is broken, and the Mayor has refused to discuss strategies to ensure that will be sufficient school space included in his push to expand efforts to build thousands of new housing units across the city.
