Build More Schools: Speak At The City Council Hearings and Join Our Letter Campaign

February 26, 2016

Dear Friend,

Our schools are more overcrowded than ever!

We need a bigger capital plan to build more schools AND to fix the broken school planning process.

Class sizes are growing, countless schools have lost their art, music, and science rooms, and too many special needs students receive their services in hallways and closets.

Come to City Hall on Tuesday, March 8 at 1 p.m. for City Council capital plan hearings about the need to solve our school overcrowding crisis! (Public testimony starts at 3 p.m.)

Also: please let me know if you’re interested in speaking at a press conference at 12:30 PM at City Hall about the situation in your school or district.

If you can’t attend, but would like me to share information about the impact of overcrowding on your child, please send me a brief summary, along with your name, school and district.

There will also be a forum that evening about school overcrowding, sponsored by the Manhattan Borough President; more info here: https://madmimi.com/p/18bb47

Finally, please send a letter now at https://actionnetwork.org/letters urging the Mayor and City Council Speaker to expand the capital plan AND to form a Commission to fix the broken school planning process.

  • More than 550,000 NYC students are crammed into overcrowded buildings but the current capital plan only funds about half of the DOE’s own estimated need.
  • Even when a school is funded in the capital plan, overcrowded communities have waited ten years or more for a school to be sited and built.
  • Overcrowding will only get worse if the Mayor’s plan to create tens of thousands of new housing units is approved – unless the school planning process is improved to ensure that schools are built along with new housing — and not decades later.
