Ask the Legislature to include NYC in state aid to make up for the cost of charter schools!
March 9, 2022
Right now, NY state legislators are working on their one-house budgets.
Meanwhile, NYC has lost out on more than $2 billion in funds between 2012 and 2020, because they are the only district in the state that is exempted from receiving charter transitional aid, meant to reimburse districts from some of the costs they suffer due to charter school expansion. And yet NYC has by far the most charter schools in the state, which is costing the DOE more than $2.6 billion a year.
AQE has estimated that the city lost out on about $258 million this year alone, because of the provision in the law that excludes the city from this critical revenue stream. For more on this see our website here.
Please send a message now to the State Legislature, urging them to include NYC in charter transition aid, and to obligate NYC to lower class size with the additional state funds we are due to receive.
Thanks! Leonie
