A critical moment for NYC schools — and for Class Size Matters
Dec. 29, 2024
Dear all — I hope you are having a wonderful holiday break.
For many years, Class Size Matters has led the fight for smaller classes in NYC, which culminated in a new law passed in the Legislature, requiring class sizes be phased-in at all NYC schools. This reform was long overdue, given how millions of the city’s students have for generations been crammed into classes of 30 or more.
But now we really need your help to ensure that this crucial opportunity reaches all those who need it. Please donate today, so we can continue our work in 2025.
Last week, the NY Times ran an article about the positive impact of smaller classes on students who have received it. What the article didn’t mention is about 500 NYC public schools that enroll nearly half of all students are so overcrowded that they do not have the space to lower class size.
Yet the city has refused to implement any plan to provide these schools with the necessary space, either by balancing enrollment between nearby schools or by building more schools in those areas where nearly all schools are already overcrowded.
Along with the Education Law Center, we sent a letter to State Education Commissioner Betty Rosa, pointing out how the city is flouting the class size and urging her to enforce it. We will not sit back and allow the city to deny NYC students this opportunity.
This is truly a critical moment for our organization and for the school system as a whole, but we need your help to continue this fight in 2025. Please make a tax-deductible donation to Class Size Matters today.
If you prefer not to donate online, you can also send a check to Class Size Matters, 124 Waverly Pl. New York, NY, 10011.
Thank you and have a wonderful New Year,
