Join us Monday night for an update on the Class Size law & what DOE should be doing to comply
Nov. 21, 2023
Dear all:
1. Important! Next Monday, Nov. 17, Class Size Matters, the Alliance for Quality Education and NYC Kids PAC are hosting a webinar at 7 PM to explain what the DOE should be doing to lower class size in accordance with the law, and how parents, teachers and community members can make their voices heard to help ensure that they do. Please register here to attend, and share this link with others who care.
2. There was a press conference this morning at PS 599, the Landmark Elementary School in Brooklyn, which is a Title One school with class sizes of 27-31 in the early grades. Parents and teachers at the school spoke eloquently about how these huge class sizes are sabotaging their efforts to provide a quality education to their students. On our website there’s more about the press conference, including links to photos and videos of the parents, teachers, advocates, and elected officials who spoke.
According to a UFT analysis, more than 300,000 students attend Title One schools in which more than half of their classes exceed the limits in the law. Contrary to the claims of the administration, only 24 of the highest need schools in NYC have class sizes small enough to be fully compliant, and likely fewer still will next year, if the Mayor goes ahead with his planned cuts to school budgets and the capital plan. There is no way that the DOE will reach next year’s legal mandate of 40% level of classes capped at the appropriate levels if these cuts are adopted. On Monday, we will be talking about how you can help fight these cuts as well.
Please join us on Monday evening and thanks!
