Join us on Monday to protest school cuts, and budget cut update

July 15, 2022

Dear All–

1. Please join parents, teachers and members of the City Council on the steps of Tweed, 52 Chambers St., at 10 AM this Monday July 18, to protest the Mayor’s savage budget cuts to schools. If you think you can make it, please RSVP here.

The Mayor is still stubbornly refusing to restore these cuts, and at a recent Town Hall meeting, he had the nerve to blame them on Albany, i.e. the Governor and the Legislature, even though the state is providing NYC with $1.3 billion in additional aid to our schools.

2. We’ve updated our assessment of the total cuts to schools as of yesterday, July 14, by scraping the data posted on the DOE Galaxy look-up tool. Our new spreadsheet is here, and can be sorted by council and school district. According to our analysis, the overall school cuts for next year total $1.42 billion compared to FY 22 so far; with 97% of schools experiencing cuts averaging $940,268 each. Though more funding may be added to these budgets later, it’s generally limited and for specific, non-staffing purposes.

Our spreadsheet can be sorted by school district and council district. There’s more discussion of this on our website here.

Hope to see you on Monday to make your voices heard; bring signs and bring your kids. We will have an important announcement to make there too.

thanks, Leonie
