Update on NPE Conference and our trip to DC

March 30, 2016

Dear Friend,

1. In a few weeks, the Network for Public Education will hold our annual conference in Raleigh NC from April 16-17. Among the keynote speakers will be Diane Ravitch, Rev. William Barber and author Bob Herbert. I will be leading two workshops, one on student privacy and the other on real “Personalized Learning”, contrasting the research and reality of class size reduction vs. online instruction. The full schedule is here; click here for more information.

NPE has become the leading national organization of parents, teachers and advocates fighting the forces that undermine our public schools, including high-stakes testing, budget cuts and privatization. Each year the opportunity to meet with like-minded allies and share strategies and information is tremendously helpful and even inspirational. Please join us!

2. A week ago on Tuesday, March 22, Rachael Stickland and I were in DC as Rachael was invited to testify before the U.S. House of Representatives on the need for stronger federal laws to protect student privacy. Rachael and I co-chair of the Parent Coalition for Student Privacy which we started in July 2014, after defeating inBloom. The webcast of the hearing can be viewed here; and Rachael’s full testimony can be found on our website.

Newsclips include: Education Data, Student Privacy Take Spotlight at Capitol Hill Hearing (Ed Week), Congress seeks to update student data privacy law (EdScoop), Congress Confronts a Balancing Act Between Education Research Data and Student Privacy Rights  (The 74), and  Student Data Under the Microscope (Politico).
