Updates on opt out and NYC KidsPAC releases Mayor de Blasio’s education report card
April 20, 2015
Dear Friends,
As you may have heard, a huge number of kids opted out of the ELA exams last week throughout NY State; the unofficial count so far is more than 183,000 with 72% of districts reporting. Many teachers reported difficult, confusing reading passages on our blog with ambiguous questions, sometimes many grade levels above the kids being tested. Principal Carol Burris also wrote about the flawed exams in the Washington Post. The math exams start on Wednesday; it’s not too late to opt out. Sample opt out letters here.
Last week, I debated the reasons for this historic opt out movement on Inside City Hall/NY1;Brooklyn Cable, and Tiempo/ Channel 7.
On Sunday, NYC KidsPAC released an education report card for Mayor de Blasio, with grades ranging from “A” to “F” based on whether he’s lived up to his campaign promises in key areas such as class size, school overcrowding, co-locations and parent engagement.
NYC KidsPAC is composed of respected Community Education Council members and parent leaders citywide. Take a look, and leave a comment on the NYC parent blog as to whether you think we graded fairly. Media outlets that reported on our report card include News 12-TV, Wall St. Journal, NY Post, WCBS radio, and Epoch Times (in Chinese).
Thanks,
Leonie Haimson
Executive Director
