Appellate Court budget cut hearings and Galaxy cuts as of Sept. 28, 2022

The Appellate Court hearings on the lawsuit to restore the budget cuts to schools are scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, Sept. 29. Only the attorneys are allowed in the courtroom but observers will be able to watch the proceedings via the live stream or on YouTube, starting at about 2 PM for all the cases on the docket that afternoon.
The calendar of cases is here; Tucker vs. City of NY is listed 17th out of 20, so the oral arguments are unlikely to start before about 3 PM. A decision in the case will likely come soon after; though we cannot know for sure.
In preparation for the arguments, we commissioned another analysis of the overall school Galaxy budget cuts. As before, this was done via a computer program using the data on the Galaxy look-up tool on the DOE website here.
As of today, Sept. 28, 2022, school budgets have been cut by a total of $1,219,293,619 compared to last year. That’s an average of $770,729 of cut per school. Overall 1,487 or 94% of schools are receiving Galaxy budget cuts this year, while 95 schools are seeing budget increases.
After September 28th last year, a total of $316,974,153 was added to the FY 2021 school budgets; likely this year the amount will be less so we can expect that the total amount cut by the end of the year will be about a billion dollars.
